Helping or Hurting Yourself

"When you’re kind to others, you help yourself;
when you’re cruel to others, you hurt yourself."
Proverbs 11:17 (MSG)

Post Comment: What do you do that allows you to respond more successfully to the every day opportunities God gives you to show kindness to others and yourself?

You either help yourself or hurt yourself. This week you have considered how God, in His kindness and love, saved you through His Son. Further, just as Christ forgave you, you are to forgive others and be kind to others. Today, that kindness includes not only others but yourself. You are to be kind and forgiving of yourself as well as others. “Cruel people bring punishment on themselves.” Sin is the punishment. A cruel person doesn’t have kindness or forgiveness in his heart to use for the good of others or for himself. Kindness toward others comes only by the Holy Spirit as fruit of a godly person. Through the kindness and love you show others and yourself, God blesses you. Cruel people have hard hearts toward others and themselves. They hurt themselves because their sin does not allow them to enjoy God’s blessings. God expects you to be good to others and to yourself so he can bless you with more of His kindness and love. Keep your eyes focused on where God is as you go through your day. Who does He put in your space? What situations happen? Pray for your heart to be open to His possibilities for showing kindness and forgiveness toward yourself and others.

Judy,
Great to read your postings while so far away. When reading about kindness today I immediately thought about an experience an hour ago. while visiting a neighborhood park with my daughter and grandson I was watching him play with another little boy. They were both showing kindness to each other, even sharing turns on the slide. There was giggling and laughter and lots of smiles.

A young mother was standing off to the side watching her son play alone. There was something about her that touched me and I began to pray for her. She seemed to have a heavy heart - perhaps she was not feeling a lot of kindness in her world. I was blessed by the giggles of the children, but I was also blessed to pray for this stranger with the weight of the world so obviously on her shoulders. I will continue to pray that she feels some kindness today.

Judy too

Thanks for sharing, Judy! You certainly had your eyes and heart open to seeing God at work as well as who He put in front of you to pray for. Enjoy your visit. Great to have you posting from far away!!
